What are ants?

Ants are some of the most common pests that we find trailing around our Tampa area yards and homes. Their tiny size allows them to move from our yards and into our homes through any small space. Ants are social insects, and their colonies are like a well-oiled machine, with all members working together to take care of each other and the nest. Their ability to work so well together is what makes them such difficult pests to control.

Like most insects, ants thrive in the warm, humid weather that Florida provides. Some of the most persistent and problematic ants that invade our properties include ghost ants, crazy ants, and acrobat ants.

Are ants dangerous?

At best, ants can be described as unwanted and, at worst, dangerous. Luckily most of the ants we come across don't pose significant dangers to people or property. No matter how common they may be, however, these pests should not be allowed to take over our Florida homes. Not only do ants invade spaces in large numbers, but as they move around your home, they track bacteria from their bodies to your home's surfaces and your family's food.

Why do I have an ant problem?

Most ants find their way to our yards and later into our homes while searching for food and water. In parts of the country where the weather is cooler, ants are most active and problematic for homeowners in the summer months. However, in Florida, where our weather is mild for most of the year, they can find their way onto our properties any time.

Where will I find ants?

Outside you will see ants wandering around gardens, flowerbeds, lawns, driveways, and sidewalks. Trash cans, compost bins, pool areas, and outdoor eating areas are other common gathering and foraging spots for these tiny insects. When wandering around our yards, it is very common for ants to find a way into our home through small cracks or other openings they discover in exterior walls, around windows and doors, or around utilities.

Once inside, they move around the kitchen, pantry, and bathroom areas seeking both food and moisture. If they decide to stay and build a nest, they usually choose the hard to reach locations behind walls, under floors, or above ceilings.
